There are around 2 million End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) per year of which 1.7 million are unserviceable old cars with little or no value. According to legislation, these End of Life Vehicles must undergo a detailed depollution by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) before the car can be recycled.
Unfortunately many of these vehicles end up abandoned on the UK’s streets and potentially never make it to an ATF for appropriate depollution. These abandoned vehicles can attract anti-social behaviour such as arson. But even without this, they are a tremendous eye-sore, nuisance and environmental hazard. Due to targets to cut the number of Abandoned Vehicles on the road by 25% before 2008, the Government is now under pressure to tackle this challenge. Beyond this there is a financial incentive, since removing nuisance vehicles costs Local Authorities approximately £26 million annually. Adding further to this, the figure to clean up vehicle arson is an astonishing £230 million. |
